United Way of Mercer County’s (UWGMC) Free Tax Program serves individuals and families that earn less than $65,000 per year. The 2020 tax season kicked off on February 1st, and volunteers have already filed 700 returns for individuals and families in the community and generated over 1 million dollars in total refunds. Of that total, nearly $350,000 was of Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
The Free Tax Program creates a pathway to financial security for struggling families in our community. For many households nationwide, tax refunds are the single largest income supplement they receive in a year.
United Way seeks to help more working families claim the EITC. The EITC is a refundable tax credit for low- to moderate-income working individuals and couples, particularly those with children. In addition to providing a financial boost for working families, the EITC helps the local economy. Research has shown that the EITC encourages work, reduces poverty and leads to long-term gains in child health and academic success.
UWGMC’s free tax program also helps clients avoid often-excessive tax preparation fees and scams like predatory loans disguised as instant tax refunds. Clients can do more than get their taxes done. They can be referred to the Benefits Access Program and get connected to federal resources like healthcare and food assistance.
“This program has a real and immediate impact on the community,” said Sandra Toussaint, President, and CEO of United Way of Greater Mercer County. “Thanks to our dedicated tax volunteers, families in Mercer County can get their taxes done for free by trained volunteers and keep their full refund. That’s money they can use to make ends meet, pay down debt, save for the future and invest in their communities.”
