Serving All and Serving ALICE

United Way of Greater Mercer County (UWGMC) serves any individual or family in need of support in Greater Mercer County. Hardship and unexpected needs can strike at any time–we are here for you. A segment often overlooked, is the A.L.I.C.E. household (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. These include working families, seniors on fixed incomes, single parents, disconnected youth, and individuals navigating economic and health inequities.

ALICE, a United Way acronym, represents the growing number of individuals and families who are working but are unable to afford the basic necessities.

We use reports from United for ALICE, a United Way project that works to improve national living standards by identifying and assisting households that are employed but still live below a sustainable financial threshold, as a framework and resource to guide our work. The reports from United ForALICE provide data-driven community based insights to reveal where our efforts are needed most.

Their research reveals a stark reality: 41% of American homes are unable to cover their essential monthly costs. By bringing visibility to these sometimes hidden struggles, the project underscores how a community’s overall success is fundamentally tied to the financial health of its individual members.
